Hearing Health for Children
Hearing issues affect up to 1 in 10 children. There are often no obvious symptoms - children adapt rather than complain. The Challenge
Challenge 1
Children don't know what normal hearing sounds like if they've never experienced it. They adapt, lip-reading, watching others for cues, often without realising anything is wrong. And for every child identified with hearing loss at birth, at least two more are detected in their first three years of school.
Challenge 2
Traditional hearing checks, including whisper tests and pure tone audiometry, don't include a test of listening difficulties in noise, an issue that can have a significant impact on children struggling to hear in a noisy classroom environment.
Challenge 3
By the time a child is formally assessed, a critical learning window may have passed. Early, accurate screening can change the outcome.
The Sound Scouts app gives parents & carers an evidence-based hearing screen they can run at home in under 15 minutes. While wearing headphones, the child responds to a set of listening tasks on a touchscreen device; you receive a pass, borderline, or fail result, with an easy to understand structured report you can take directly to your GP or hearing specialist.
How it works
