How do I ensure a valid test result on the Triple Factor Hearing Screener?

Steps to take before testing to improve accuracy and reliability.

We recommend supervising adults download the Sound Scouts app and read the screening guide prior to testing the child.

When you are ready to test:

  1. Make sure the child has eaten and been to the bathroom.
  2. The adult fills in the child’s details and completes a short calibration exercise using the same headphones/earbuds and listening carefully.
  3. Child does trial practices (quit out of the Trial Run as soon as the child is familiar with the test activities).
  4. The adult supervises while the child plays.
  5. Tell the child to listen carefully and tap/swipe when they hear the sound. If the sound gets too quiet or they can’t hear anything, tell them to keep listening — the sounds will get louder.
  6. If the child taps randomly, instruct them to stop and listen carefully.
  7. If a fail/borderline result is received, do a retest after 24 hours and ideally within 7 days.

NB: 1 credit allows you to test an individual up to four times. A retest does not require another credit.
